The White family’s history of farming in Shandon goes back 122 years. It began in 1888, when George H. White immigrated from New Brunswick, Canada, with his family, including 12-year-old son George A. White. George H. White originally purchased 320 acres of farming land, but gradually expanded to 1,200 acres, and the White Ranch Company has continued to expand.
George A. White’s sons, Richard, George and Marion, developed their interest in agriculture while performing daily chores alongside their father. Marion White’s sons, Jerold and the late Kenneth White, and George White’s son, Ron, carried on the family’s life as agriculturalists. Ron, who is Jerry’s cousin, retired in the late 1990s.
By then, Jerry had earned a bachelor’s degree at Cal Poly and was well on his way to a life of service in the local agricultural community. He still resides on the White Ranch in the house built by “Cramp and Napa’s” (George A. and Emily [Gates] White), and his nephews Clay and Clint have brought the family business into its fifth generation.
